October 6-22 2012 Come join the Friends of Honolulu Botanical Gardens on this excellent 17 day tour of Sri Lanka. This is not a tour that you can book through a magazine or travel brochure. It has been custom designed by our travel experienced Board Members. Deadline for reserving space is February 15, 2012. A brief description of the tour is described for you. For those of you who are interested, a more detailed itinerary and what the price includes can be sent to you upon request. A summary of the itinerary follows:
October 7: a day in Colombo (air conditioned bus throughout tour); visit special gardens and the Mary Foster Ayurvedic Medicine Center endowed by Mary Foster who also gave Foster Garden to the people of Honolulu; Galle Face Hotel (Breakfast and Lunch)
October 9 and 10: to Anuradhapura the ancient capital of Sri Lanka 377 b.c.-993 a.d.; this is possibly the high point of the Cultural Triangle; visit the Sacred Bo Tree; the ‘parent’ of the one in Foster Garden; major Buddhist attraction.
October 11 and 12: to Polonnaruwa ancient capital of Sri Lanka following the destruction of Anuradhapura in 993; rich variety of well-preserved structures. Deer Park Hotel (Breakfast)
October 14: to Dambulla to visit the incredible five temples built into natural caves with 52 feet ceilings; highly venerated. Heavily visited by Buddhists, impressive. Hotel Suisse in Kandy (Breakfast and Lunch) October 15: we complete our tour of the Perideniya Botanical Gardens and again lunch there. Balance of the afternoon is free in Kandy. Walk. Rest. Hotel Suisse has a fine swimming pool (Breakfast and Lunch) October 16: we will have our bus and driver. the group will plan its own day! There are beautiful temples in the area and the interesting Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage is popular. Hotel Suisse (Breakfast and Lunch)
October 20: return to Colombo either by bus or if available, by train to Kandy, bus to Colombo. Galle Face Hotel (Breakfast and Lunch) October 21: Colombo. Ewe will keep our bus and driver for the day to visit places of special interest. In the evening, enjoy an ‘Aloha Dinner’ (included in tour package) at the excellent Gallery Café, October 22: transfer to Airport for flights homeward bound.
